The Women’s Opportunity Awards program is Soroptimist’s major service project. The award improves the lives of women by giving them the resources they need to improve their education, skills, and employment prospects. Each year, Soroptimist clubs in 19 countries and territories assist women in overcoming personal difficulties and improving their lives through education and skills training. The women, who provide the primary source of financial support for their families, may use the cash award to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education, including books, childcare and transportation. Club recipients become eligible for additional cash awards at other levels of the organization, including three $10,000 finalist awards. This year Soroptimist of Rio Vista is pleased to have two winners. The first runner up award went to Jessica Borboa. Jessica is a single mother of one son, age 2. Jessica is enrolled at Los Medanos Community College seeking a nursing degree. She has a special interest in neonatal & pediatric care. Her goal is to someday work at Oakland Children’s Hospital. Jessica realized after having her son that she needed a better career due to financial strains. Her decision to go back to school has lead her on a journey of self-discovery and independence. We are proud to honor her in her efforts. Soroptimist Top Women’s Opportunity Award Scholarship went to Cindy Bradford. Cindy is the mother of 3 children ages 17, 12, & 5. She is currently enrolled at Solano Community College. She will receive her AA degree in Human Services in December 08. In the future she plans to earn a BA degree in social work. Cindy is a single parent currently working to provide for her three children. Congratulations Cindy. |
